Trail Etiquette & Situational Awareness

• Stay alert to other riders, pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles, and changing trail conditions.
• Ride on the right whenever practical. Do not ride in the middle unless needed to safely navigate a hazard.
• Allow faster riders to pass on the left when safe. Announce yourself before passing another trail user.
• Ride at a speed that lets you stop within your visible path. High speeds are only appropriate when conditions clearly allow.
• Slow significantly for blind corners, intersections, trailheads, crowded areas, limited visibility, and other trail users.
• Use a bell or other audible warning when approaching pedestrians, cyclists, or slower riders. Pass courteously and at a safe speed.
• Ride predictably; avoid sudden swerves, abrupt stops, or actions that could endanger others.

Group Ride Communication

• Learn and use the group’s hand signals for hazards, slowing, stopping, turns, and other important information.
• Pass hand signals and hazard warnings down the line so every rider receives the same information.
• If you are unfamiliar with the signals, ask before the ride—we’re happy to teach them.
• Maintain a safe following distance to allow adequate reaction time.

Group Ride Expectations

• Follow directions from ride leaders during organized rides.
• Ride at a pace appropriate for your skill level and the ride conditions.
• If you need to leave early, let a ride leader know.
• Look out for one another. Stop to assist riders involved in a crash or mechanical issue when it is safe to do so.
• At intersections or turns, help ensure those behind you know which direction the group has gone whenever practical.

Respect Others

• Be courteous to pedestrians, cyclists, equestrians, motorists, and all other trail users.
• Yield when required by law or trail rules.
• Treat all participants with respect regardless of experience level. Harassment, discrimination, bullying, or aggressive behavior will not be tolerated.
• Encourage newer riders, while recognizing that not every ride suits every skill level.

Ride Within Your Limits

Some rides involve higher speeds, technical terrain, long distances, or challenging conditions. Ride leaders may designate rides for intermediate or advanced riders.

If your skill level, equipment, or riding ability creates a safety concern for yourself or the group, a ride leader may recommend a slower or beginner-friendly ride.

Protect Our Riding Areas

• Follow all applicable laws, park regulations, trail rules, and closures.
• Stay on designated trails unless off-trail travel is permitted.
• Leave no trace. Pack out your trash and respect the environment.
• Avoid behavior that damages trails, property, or the reputation of the PEV community.
